For centuries, Shaolin monks have completed 35 trials called chambers, to master the physical and mental kung fu skills. As my final product design project this was my final challenge, equating it as my 35th chamber, and completing the build in 19 days.
The 35th chamber features a lunar lander form in order to position speakers 360 degrees for full sound coverage. The welded steel legs feature wok feet to resemble lunar lander feet and are finished in rainbow glitter. This boombox can stand on it’s feet or be suspended upside down, above it’s listeners.
This boombox will be used at Arch Productions & Design’s commercial fabrication shop and production facility in New York, and was made possible through their electronic component sponsorship.

Making Things Move Design Studio
Making Things Move was an interdisciplinary studio course which explored the designing and making of kinetic objects, both as functional objects and as sculptural objects of meaning. This studio course gave hands-on experience with all manner of processes for making kinetic objects, including working with gravity-powered machines, simple linkages and mechanisms, small motors, as well as soft sculpture.
We also considered the ways that a moving object can communicate ideas and emotions through direct exploration of materiality and form. Exploring ideas of efficiency/inefficiency, beauty, complexity/simplicity, empathy for machines, and the ways that we anthropomorphize an object in motion, helped develop a vocabulary both for making kinetic objects, and to discuss them as creative, poetic, and beautiful meaning machines.

January, 2018
This kinetic sculpture was designed to convey a feeling of joy, and was inspired by an excited puppy wagging it's tail. The body is 1/4" welded steel with corner "shoulder" details. The legs, arms, and snout were made from ash wood. The internal hardware, inside out snout, and horns on top of the wires are 3D printed with glow in the dark filament.

This glow in the dark 3D printed foot skeleton is built from spring joints, and walks on a wine colored ribbon conveyor belt. This machine is powered by a single DC motor, just to the left of the on/off switch, and turns a total of 6 rubber belts that are hand stitched with fishing line. All of these parts rotate the two wheels to move the brass wire and foot to walk on eternally....
Conrad Presents: The Wire
This assignment was to create an emotive motion only using string, a one material object, and a wire. I chose a curved broken piece of a coffee mug from the JFK library I had kept for a couple months on my desk. I used the wire to plunge the glass piece towards the ground building and holding the audience in suspense. Though not premeditated, this touches back to my final from my form studio working with broken glass as a mushroom cloud.
Shock Absorber
Component Design and Analysis
March, 2018
March, 2018
The scope of this project was to design a motorcycle shock absorber and spring assembly that would satisfactorily withstand the weight of a rider during normal operating and subsequent impulses to the suspension system. In order to most efficiently develop a design that would meet project goals, Concurrent Engineering (CE) methodologies were applied. One of the integral principles of CE development is enhancing communication among team members and subdivisions. In order to facilitate this, the team utilized the GroupMe software as the primary means of interfacing throughout the term. Centralized data storage and accessibility is another essential aspect of the CE process, as all members must be able to quickly and accurately access each facet of the design. For the documentation aspects the team relied on the Google Drive suite to provide centralized storage. Onshape, nother cloud storage suite, specifically designed for CAD files, was utilized as the archive for CAD models. The use of cloud storage enhances the revision security of data, helping to ensure that non-current versions are not being accidentally implemented by team members. CAD design and validation was carried out using Creo, Onshape, and ANSYS workbench.

I designed and constructed this sign while working at Arch. Wanting to communicate the legacy of president Obama, I was inspired to poise him as a champion to the like of Muhammad Ali.
The sign was built entirely by hand, and is constructed from 1/4" acrylic with a printed adhesive vinyl graphic along with stainless steel standoffs. The wooden base houses a LED strip for a backlit effect, and features a remote control.

Abstract Form Studio
Product Design
January - March, 2017
January - March, 2017
This product design studio explores beauty, hierarchy, and movement through various form studies all grounded in the design philosophy of Rowena Reed Kostellow. I created rectilinear, curvalinear, linear, and planar forms with varying materials. I also created accompanying expressive pieces and renderings as assigned.
Rectilinear Form
This form reflects tension and balance as the small piece of wood is suspended at the far end of the form in a cantilever configuration. This form is constructed with a polished brass beam capped with a cut out section of a real U.S. Penny at the ends, a concrete base, and balsa wood accent.
Curvalinear Form
This form is inspired by the spotlights of Hollywood. Maple and oak wood cone, white acrylic ovoid plane that is glossy on top to reflect light but painted matte white underneath. A small brass rod represents the crossing paths of the lights inserted on the top of the cone.
Curvalinear Kaleidoscope
This graphic shows all the sides of the curvilinear form in the same plane and uses color to display how lighting reflects off of the form. The 30" x 30" graphic print was created by taking photos of the curvalinear form, editing them in photoshop, and finally tracing and patterning the photos in illustrator.
Linear Form
This form represents two people kissing. The line represents two becoming one through negative space where there is a place for two people. The straight section at the end resembles an arm holding the other's head, while the other end is an arm wrapped around the waist.
Planar Form
This form was inspired by speed and upward twisting. The sharp folds and turns give the form an aggressive or violent appearance. The subdominant triangle is piercing the dominant rectangle form which is grounded along it's bottom edge to imply strength and weight. The grounded form adds speed since the triangle must be moving that much faster to pierce such an object. I set my rendering of the form on the University of Pennsylvania's campus with the form as a large sculpture and envision people leaving against it to interact with the form.
"Vintage" Inspired Design Final
After randomly being assigned the word 'vintage' I created 15 three dimensional sketches to reflect my interpretation of vintage. The term vintage is defined as the year that the best quality wine was produced. I believe vintage items tell a story, and also represent the best design of their respective times.
Since vintage items cannot be imitated(or they will loose their authenticity), I chose a reactive design approach of dropping a china plate on a concrete floor. I also placed a red ceramic cup in the oven, and then submerged the cup in ice water causing it to fracture. I then used the pieces that had been created out of my control to build the three dimensional sketches.

Final Form
My final form reflects the atomic age from 1945 to 1975. The form is shaped to resemble an atomic explosion created from the vintage materials that reflect the modern materials that emerged at the time such as aluminum, plywood, and glass.
The outer ring is constructed of aluminum fastened with steel rivets, and represents the creation and the wide use of jet aircraft after World War II. The wood section represents the use of plywood in midcentury design, such as the Eames lounge chair or Eames leg splint. The mushroom cloud is constructed of broken vintage glass I used in my initial study forms, and reflects the precarious nature of living in a world just after nuclear arms have been used and created.

These crutches belonged to my close friend and freshman roommate Srijoy Mitra, which were purchased due to a foot injury while three of us were riding an ATV. Srijoy was riding on the front of the ATV and we hit a log concealed in a tall brush field, coming to a dead stop and causing Srijoy to fly forward off of the ATV. We rushed him to the hospital as I was using my shirt to stop his foot from bleeding, and he subsequently received 20 stitches.
In the following week Srijoy departed to India to travel with his parents and their class of college students. During that period Srijoy’s personal growth and relationship with his parents grew as he fought off infection for weeks. After six weeks in India he taped his crutches together and checked on his return trip as he would return to America on foot. The taped crutches that had been around the world sat untouched for about a year before I cut them apart and placed them on display in an ‘X’ orientation, as you would and antique rifle or sword. This piece represents personal growth and healing.
